Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of the season of Lent, a period of 40 days, mirroring the 40 days Jesus of Nazareth spent in the desert wilderness, fasting, praying and facing the realities we humans often face.
At this service we take time to acknowledge that we will someday die, hence the reason we make a cross of ashes on our foreheads. This is the same place that a cross of water or sacred oil was made at our baptism.
It is this juxtaposition of life and death, death and rebirth that is commemorated on Ash Wednesday.
This service is meant to help us prepare our hearts and our minds for the 40 days of the season of Lent.
In 2023, this Ash Wednesday service will be held on Wednesday, February 22 at 7pm.
